Naruto’s Gaara of the sand is one of the most popular, well-known, and beloved characters in all of anime and maybe all of fiction. His journey from a murderous child soldier to a well-mannered and somber Kazekage has been inspirational. That said, it is safe to say that it was not always smooth sailing for the young Kazekage. Here are a few things you didn’t know about Naruto’s Gaara of the sand.
GAARA’S NAME MEANS SELF LOVING DEMON
Gaara’s name literally translates to self loving demon or self loving silk. Not surprising considering his story. The demon part likely has to do with the Shukaku in him and his murderous tendencies when he was younger. It’s safe to say he’s outgrown the demon part and has come to love himself a bit more than he used to.
NARUTO’S GAARA IS REALLY POPULAR
Gaara is a really popular character. He is one of the few characters to consistently pop up in the top 10 in character polls. Readers and watchers really love him and are inspired by his story and does that come as any surprise?
HE LOVES CULTIVATING CACTI
Gaara has a few hobbies, one lesser one is cultivating cactus. Yes Naruto’s Gaara of the sand enjoys cultivating cactus. An unseeming hobby for a talented and powerful shinobi such as himself would you not agree?
GAARA LOVES GIZZARDS
Gizzards are among some of Gaara’s favorite foods. His favorite foods also include salted tongue. He loves gizzards and salted tongues and enjoys eating them.
HE WAS ALMOST CALLED KOTARO
Masashi Kishimoto admitted that he almost called Gaara Kotaro before his editor suggested Gaara. It’s funny how Gaara has become such a beloved name. It almost seems strange that the character could have been called Kotaro, can you imagine that? Kotaro of the sand!
HE IS A CAPRICORN
Naruto’s Gaara is a capricorn. I know right! Then again Gaara does have all the traits signature of a capricorn. Hardworking, ambitious, practical and responsible. It’s hard to think of him being anything other than a capricorn. You go capricorns. We love you.
HIS DAD WAS KAZEKAGE
Gaara’s father was Kazekage before him. He was a terrible father, even having Gaara’s close guardian nearly murder him but it is thought he did everything he did for the good of the village. That said it doesn’t justify him being a bad father.
ONE OF HIS FAVORITE WORDS IS AFFECTION

According to the databooks the complete number of missions Gaara has finished is 32, some C class, B class, A class missions and about 3 S class missions. For a shinobi his age that is quite a lot of missions. Gaara totally rocks.
HE WAS THE YOUNGEST KAZEKAGE IN HISTORY
Gaara became Kazekage at age 15 making him the fifth and youngest Kazekage in history. Since then he has grown nicely into the role, mentoring his son Shinki and teaching him what it means to be a shinobi and a good one at that.
